NASA's $10 billion James Webb telescope has only 68GB of storage

After launching the James Webb Space Telescope into space, NASA also shared images of the Universe taken by the telescope, attracting a lot of attention from people around the world.

NASA has also confirmed that its telescope has cost a total of 10 billion dollars, but the interesting point is that despite the cost, but decided. Use only 68GB SSD storage on that telescope to store various data.

68GB of storage is not much, in fact, it can store data that the telescope captures only one day. This does not mean that NASA needs more storage space, because in fact, the James Wepp telescope will maintain a connection to Earth through the Deep Space Network to send data captured every day to Earth every day. Must be 57GB daily.

It takes about 4.5 hours to send all that data back to Earth, and the data transfer speed is about 28Mbps. Therefore, all the data that James Wepp captures is stored on the telescope itself for one day only, then the data will be sent back to Earth completely, no need to be stored on the James Wepp telescope.

It should be noted that 3% of the 68GB SSD is used for storage in Engineering and Telemetry, and NASA also predicts that within 10 years, James Wepp's 68GB storage space may be left. Only 60GB can be used with such a reduction due to service life and space radiation.
